Košice Gold Treasure (Exhibit in VSM in Košice)
The exhibit of the Košice Gold Treasure is located in the historical building of The East Slovak Museum. It is the richest find of gold coins in Slovakia that was discovered in 1935 during construction work on Hlavna Street in Košice. The treasure was stored for hundreds of years, untouched, in a copper casket engraved with animal motifs. It consists of of 2 920 gold coins and ducats, three gold medals and a Renaissance gold chain. The rich representation of coin types and the wide geographical spread makes the Košice Gold Treasure one of Europe’s artistic gems. An equestrian medal of King Ferdinand from the 16th century is also one of the gems of the treasure. The Gold Treasure is available to the public in a specially modified vault where only a small number of people fit; therefore an interactive audiovisual system with touch screen LCD panels is used more often to view the said treasure.
